Former VC Kashmir University Passes Away


Srinagar, November 17 (KAT): Prof. Abdul Wahid Qureshi, a distinguished academician and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir and the Central University of Kashmir, passed away following a sudden cardiac arrest at SKIMS, Soura. Originally hailing from Karnah, Kupwara, Prof. Qureshi’s demise has left the academic and administrative circles in profound grief.

A renowned scholar and administrator, Prof. Qureshi served as Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University and was known for his humble leadership and the deep connect with the University staff.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, former students, and associates, remembering his immense contributions and noble character.

Former Kashmir University professor Hamidullah Marazi described Prof. Qureshi as “a mentor and guide” and recounted his impeccable leadership during the first Philosophical Congress held at Kashmir University in 1986. “His noble behavior, clean image, and exceptional administrative skills left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with,” said Marazi.

Prof. Qureshi was instrumental in securing the establishment of the Department of Religious Studies at the Central University of Kashmir, reflecting his vision for academic development.

Afzal Zargar, expressing personal loss, said, “He was the noblest soul and my guide. His passing is a significant loss for the academic community.”

The Central University of Kashmir Alumni Association (CUKAA) expressed its sorrow in a statement: “May Almighty bless the departed soul with Jannatul Firdous. His contributions to the institution and the region’s education sector are unparalleled.

Shahid Ali Khan, a former student, remembered him as “an upright, honest, and noble soul” and “one of the greatest teachers in the Department of Economics.” He noted Prof. Qureshi’s profound impact on his own professional journey and praised his integrity and dedication.

Prof. Qureshi will be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Karnah. His family departed for Karnah. A condolence meeting is expected to be announced soon at Sadrabal, Srinagar.
