Uri, Feb 26 (GNS): Residents of Ward No. 3 in Daragutaliyan village of Uri have alleged that they have been reeling under a prolonged electricity crisis for the past three months, with the area’s lone power transformer reportedly developing faults nine times during the period, plunging the locality into repeated darkness.
The villagers told GNS that the frequent breakdowns have severely disrupted daily life, leaving families in distress and uncertainty. They claimed that even during the holy month of Ramadan, they have been forced to manage Sehri and Iftar arrangements by candlelight due to the absence of electricity. The erratic supply, they added, has also taken a toll on children’s education, as students struggle to study in the evenings.
Locals further alleged that the electricity infrastructure in the area is in a deteriorated condition. According to them, several stretches lack proper electricity poles, with power lines hanging loosely from trees and bushes. The wires, they said, are old and worn out, posing both inconvenience and safety risks.
Despite repeated complaints, they alleged that the Power Development Department (PDD) has failed to carry out necessary repairs and upgrades.
Questioning the authorities, residents said that while they continue to pay their electricity bills on time, the quality of supply and maintenance remains poor. They urged the higher officials of the department to intervene and ensure immediate restoration and strengthening of the power infrastructure in the village.
When contacted, an engineer from the PDD told GNS that work on the improvement of the High Tension (HT) line in Uri is currently underway. He said that details of the HT line are being compiled and expressed hope that in the second phase, the department will initiate improvement of the Low Tension (LT) lines, with the affected areas, including Daragutaliyan, likely to be covered.
"The faulty transformer will be lifted tomorrow for repairment," the official added. (GNS)
