Kashmir Schools Gear Up for Early Exams as Weather Turns Cold

Srinagar,November 07 (KAT): The Jammu and Kashmir government has reversed its academic calendar, with most schools across the Kashmir Valley preparing to hold exams for classes 1 to 9 between November 20 and December 5.

This change comes as the region faces persistent dry weather and a cold wave during morning and evening hours, prompting schools to complete exams before the onset of harsh winter conditions.

The formal notification regarding the November-December exams was issued by the government yesterday, following a proposal by Education Minister Sakina Itoo during a recent cabinet meeting. The proposal was unanimously approved, marking the end of the March session for students in classes 1 to 9. However, students in classes 10 to 12 will continue with the March exam schedule for now.

Farooq Ahmed, the head of a school in Srinagar, confirmed that date sheets are being printed and exams will begin soon, starting with kindergarten and progressing through to class 9. “We will start from Kindergarten, from class 1 to class 5 and from class 6 to class 9,” Ahmed said.

Despite schools adjusting their timings from 10 am to 3 pm, teachers noted that younger students, especially in KG classes, are struggling with the cold temperatures. Teachers like Kulsoom, from another Srinagar school, emphasised that exams will take place soon, as the winter break is expected by mid-December.

Parents have expressed support for the early exams, urging that the exams be completed in November with results announced by December 5 to avoid any disruption from the harsh winter.(KAT)
