VPN Services Suspended Across Kashmir For Security Reasons

Srinagar, January 2 (KAT): The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday imposed a ban on the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in several districts of the Kashmir valley.

The restrictions come after authorities in South & North Kashmir’s several districts imposed a two-month ban on the use of VPN services.

On Thursday, police in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district informed the general public that, following directions from the District Magistrate, the use of VPN services has been temporarily restricted across the district with immediate effect.

“This measure has been taken as a preventive step to ensure public safety, cyber security and maintenance of law and order. It is aimed at preventing any misuse of VPN services that could hinder lawful monitoring or compromise security,” a police spokesperson said.

Police said that the public has been requested to fully comply with the restrictions and refrain from using VPN services on all digital devices during the period.

Police said any non-compliance or violation of the order would invite strict legal action under relevant provisions of law. Similar orders have been issued in other districts of the Valley as well.

A senior security official said the action was aimed at preventing the misuse of VPN services by elements seeking to disrupt peace in the Valley.(KAT)
