CCIK Discusses Tourism Slowdown with Ministers; Promotional Push, Relief Measures Sought

Srinagar, Dec 05 (GNS): The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashmir (CCIK) on Friday convened a meeting of its Executive Committee, attended by Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs Javid Rana; Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani; and Joint Director Tourism Kashmir Waseem Raja.

CCIK President Tariq Rashid Ghani welcomed the dignitaries and flagged key concerns regarding the recent slowdown in the tourism sector. He called for renewed promotional campaigns and suggested that Kashmir’s tourism potential be marketed more aggressively in South Indian states to boost arrivals.

The Chamber, as per GNS, expressed strong reservations about the ₹500 entry fee being charged at Aru Valley, saying the charge may discourage tourists and adversely affect the local economy. Ghani also raised the challenges faced by tourism taxi operators burdened with bank loans, urging the government to consider an interest waiver or relief package.

To enhance winter tourism, CCIK proposed hosting festivals and events at Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, aimed at increasing footfall and improving visibility for the region.

“Tourism is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and requires timely support and promotion. We request the government to reconsider the Aru Valley entry fee and provide relief to taxi operators. With focused promotion and events at major destinations, we can revive tourist confidence,” Ghani said.

The meeting was also attended by President SKAL Kashmir Abdul Wahid, TTIG Chairman Akram Siah, HBOA Chairman Manzoor Pakhtoon, Baber Chowdary (President JK HARA), Jan Mohd (President Shere-Khass), office bearers and other Executive Committee members.

Minister Javid Rana assured the Chamber that the concerns raised would receive positive consideration and appropriate action. Ghani noted that CCIK has recently held several meetings with the administration, including the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, to pursue issues related to trade and tourism.
