As road accidents surge, week-long Road Safety prog begins to sensitize people


Srinagar, Jan 12: Amidst the rise in road accidents, the week-long National Road Safety programme has commenced in Srinagar while a series of activities are expected to take place in which the commuters and general public will be sensitized about the traffic norms that will help in reducing the fatal accidents.

The Traffic Police authorities as well as the Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department launched the National Road Safety Week in Srinagar. The inauguration ceremony at Srinagar saw the presence of officials and students from various colleges and other educational institutions.

Senior traffic police officials told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a series of events and initiatives are planned throughout the week to engage the community and promote responsible road behavior.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Srinagar City, while speaking to the media, highlighted the alarming rise in road accidents and stressed the importance of fostering a culture of adherence to traffic rules.

“The campaign aims to educate citizens about the significance of road safety, including the proper use of helmets, seat belts, and adherence to speed limits,” he said.

Students from various Colleges told KNO that being a part of the inaugural programme was insightful for them and that everyone should play his or her part of driving discipline.

Transport officials said that various interactive sessions and awareness drives will be organized across the city.

The traffic police official further said that the week-long initiative also involves deploying additional personnel for intensified traffic checks, ensuring strict enforcement of traffic rules—(KNO)
